Reproductive Awakening:
Narratives of Agency in Black America

MoWRe (Museum of Women in Resistance) Brooklyn, NY

Reproductive Awakening: Narratives of Agency in Black America is currently accepting submissions for its landmark exhibition exploring the historical, social and political impact of Black Midwives on reproductive rights in communities of African-American women. The exhibition lays psychosocial inquiry into reproductive autonomy with special emphasis on birthing traditions and abortion rights of Black Women in America from the 20th century to the present.  Reproductive Awakening: Narratives of Agency in Black America celebrates an evolution of the spirit of advocacy that continues to sustain the network of midwives that serve communities of African-American women. The exhibition will be on view at the Museum of Women in Resistance (MoWRe) from October 3 to November 23, 2014, and will include special events and programming focused on her story of midwifery, female sexual anatomy, and holistic healing and wellness. Artists working in all visual arts mediums are encouraged to apply.

The Museum of Women in Resistance (MoWRe):

The Museum of Women’s Resistance (MoWRe) also known as The Edith Savage Jennings Legacy Museum examines the diversity, dynamism, and global influence of women of African descent and cultures over time in the realms of family, work, community, nations and the natural environment.  MoWRe’s year-round exhibitions and programs include historical and contemporary objects, as well as commissioned art, sculptures, textiles, and pottery. Video and sound stations provide selections from historical and contemporary interviews, literature, proverbs, prayers, folk tales, songs, and oral epics from the African continent as well as the African Diaspora.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Submissions are open to all women who currently live in the United States. Visual artists working in all mediums may submit jpgs and/or video samples of their work. Artists may select up to (5) works for consideration and should not exceed  5 or 6 mb’s. Works may be no more than 25 pounds in weight  92” in height. DEADLINE EXTENDED TO September 19, 2014. Selected artists will be notified by September 22th ,2014. Submissions may be sent by email to: submissions@reproductiveawakening.com.

ENTRY FEE:

The entry fee for the exhibition  is $10. You may pay with your Credit Card from our Secure Page via Paypal.

You may also pay via check and/or money order as an enclosure with your mailed slide entry to:

MUTUAL CONSENT/INSURANCE:

By submitting your work to Choose To Evolve, all artists agree to allow reproduction of their slides, digital files and/or photographs taken of their art for educational, publicity, and archival purposes.

Choose To Evolve reserves the right to photograph any or all works submitted for this exhibit for publicity and/or educational purposes. Images used for any of the mentioned purposes will be retained in Choose To Evolve archives.

Artwork is not insured while on exhibit at the Museum of Women in Resistance. Accepted artists must take care of their own insurance needs while artwork is being shipped and on exhibit at MoWRe.
